BARMY MUSINGS by HERCULES GROUNDWATER
Hercules here – and this is my year!

.Paintings have feelings too300

.
Well I’m continuing my trip through Calabria and I’m in Cosenza.

,
Its nestled in the foothills of the Calabrian Mountains, so there are lots of little fountains in town fed from mountain springs. So the water is very fresh and clean. I have, though, noticed that there are also quite a few dwarves and folk with strange growths wandering the streets.

.
Never mind that – I went to an amazing art gallery. That Caravaggio fella sure did good. Inspired a whole lot of new intensity into painting.

.
Got me to musing: How would it be if it went both ways? What if the paintings had feelings toward the visitors in the gallery? They might plead and tug at your heartstrings just as you are letting your guard down and getting all emotionally inspired.

.
‘Please don’t leave me’ they might implore ‘Nobody else can look at me the way that you do, Hercules’

.
And the next painting will be saying ‘ Come over here you sassy little cutie’ ‘I’m sure that you will love the new light forms my father Mattia Preti has given me – I am irresistible – just melt into my tonal range (cheeky kissette blown in my direction).

.
HOW DO I CHOSE? WHAT CAN I DO? WHICH SHALL I STAY WITH AND FOR HOW LONG?

.
I am spinning around, befuddled, I’m like that end bit in 2001 (A Space Oddysey), I am caught between Scilla and Charybdis.

.
And I am BIG trouble. I am not yer average punter. Not solid. I’m a 2D sort of guy. Paper thin. I could get drawn into one of these pictures and never be able to get out again.

.
I steel myself and rapidly rustle away. I find another space. Great! In here there are drawings safely contained in dispay cases. AND – Umberto Boccioni’s ‘Unique Forms…’ AMAZING. I can look at this futurist masterpiece in safety. IT IS SOLID. IT DOESN’T TRY TO ABSORB ME.

.
Ta Ta for now!
